Live Blog: Major League Soccer – Seattle Sounders FC at Chivas USA

This is the live blog post for the Major League Soccer game featuring the Seattle Sounders FC at Chivas USA. Live updates will being about 15-20 minutes before kick-off.

Starting line-ups are in for each team.

Seattle Sounders FC – Chris Eylander, James Riley, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Tyrone Marshall, Zach Scott, Sebastien Le Toux, Osvaldo Alonso, Freddie Ljungberg, Brad Evans, Nate Jaqua, Fredy Montero. Reserves: Ben Dragavon, Patrick Ianni, Nathan Sturgis, Tyson Wahl, Sanna Nyassi, Roger Levesque, Steve Zakuani.

Chivas USA – Zach Thornton, Carey Talley, Shavar Thomas, Jonathan Bornstein, Atiba Harris, Sacha Kljestan, Jesse Marsch, Bojan Stepanovic, Alecko Eskandarian, Eduardo Lillingston. Reserves: Lance Parker, Jim Curtin, Chukwudi Chijindu, Jorge Flores, Michael Lahoud, Gerson Mayen.

1′ – And the game begins with the two top teams in the Western conference playing for the first time.

3′ – Possession back and forth early in the game.

5′ – A great through ball to Lillingston but the defense closes down on him and gets possession back.

6′ – Harris wins a ball in the box but can’t get a shot off as Chivas are taking the momentum early.

8′ – Most of the possession and chances have been with Chivas.

10′ – Ljungberg with a great pass to Montero who gets a breakaway and goes for the chip shot, but it’s just wide of the net as Thornton was beat on that play.

12′ – The Sounders starting to play some better soccer with a few chances as Montero is starting to get in the attack.

15′ – Montero still with the best chance for either side with his earlier chip shot that missed wide.

18′ – A physical game so far with several fouls for both sides, but no yellow cards issued.

19′ – Neither team able to get many scoring chances or shots on goal.

20′ – Lillingston with a late tackle on Ljungberg and he earns a yellow card. A free kick to be taken by Le Toux.

21′ – Le Toux sends the ball into the box but Thornton is able to catch it and possession back to Chivas.

24′ – Both teams playing solid defense and not making any major mistakes in the match.

26′ – Ljungberg with a pass to Jaqua who chests it down but the Chivas defense is there and steals it away to break up the play.

30′ – Chivas with some chances but several offsides called during their attack.

31′ – Eskandarian with a nice run and the defense has to clear to conced a throw-in near the corner for Chivas.

32′ – Chivas with the first goal, 1-0, on some great combination passing from the home side. Lillingston got a through ball that he sent back across the box and Riley put it in net for an own goal, and Chivas leads 1-0.

35′ – Seattle giving the ball away in midfield too easily. Ljungberg earns a free kick about 35-40 yards or so and Thornton clears it out of bounds.

37′ – The Sounders hold possession and pass it around but again can’t connect on a pass in the final third and give possession back to Chivas.

39′ – A corner kick for Seattle to be taken by Le Toux. It’s sent in over the head of everyone and out of bounds for a Chivas throw-in.

42′ – Only a few minutes left in the first half and Chivas still leading on the own goal.

43′ – A great chance for Seattle as a cross is sent in and a header that is saved. Jaqua with the cross and Le Toux’s header is just saved by Thornton.

45′ – A yellow card to Zach Scott of Seattle.  One minute of stoppage time.

45′+1 – Seattle with the last chance of the half as Riley earns a free kick. It’s cleared by Chivas and the whistle sounds as it’s 1-0 for Chivas at halftime.

46′ – The second half begins with Seattle needing to pick it up to avoid a 2 game losing streak. Zakuani in and Le Toux out for Seattle.

48′ – Fredy Montero with a late challenge and he’s given a yellow card.

49′ – Zach Scott down on the field and play is temporarily stopped as he slowly gets to his feet.

50′ – Montero with a through ball to Ljungberg who gets a shot on goal but Bornstein with good defense.

54′ – Jaqua with a wide ball to Zakuani who gets some space but his cross his way too far and out of bounds.

56′ – Zakuani with a pass to Jaqua who gets a shot to the near post as Thornton has to make a diving save.

57′ – Chijindu in and Lillingston out for Chivas USA. The corner is headed wide of the net for a goal kick.

60′ – Chivas with some possession and starting to grab the momentum of the match.

62′ – Seattle having trouble in their own end clearing the ball and marking players on crosses. Chijindu nearly with an incredible goal but its sent wide.

64′ – A free kick for Seattle around 35-40 yards from goal. The shot is taken by Montero and way off target for a goal kick.

68′ – A corner kick for Chivas USA, with about 20 minutes yet and a 1-0 lead for the home team. The Sounders head it out but can’t clear it as possession is back and forth.

69′ – Zakuani with the ball on the left side and he goes at the defense and takes a shot but its wide of the net. The rookie has been dangerous this half, replacing Le Toux who played the first.

70′ – Eskandarian out and Lahoud in for Chivas USA.

71′ – Nyassi in and Riley out for Seattle. The Sounders starting to get a little momentum with some chances in the last few minutes.

74′ – Chivas with a chance but Eylander comes out to make a save.

76′ – Atiba Hariss out and Gerson Mayen in for Chivas USA.

77′ – Seattle with possession and starting to take some chances.

80′ – The pace of the game picking up significant as the Sounders sending more players forward and Chivas looking for the counterattack.

81′ – A free kick for Kljestan who sends it in and it’s wide.

83′ – Nyassi with a dangerous cross into the box but Montero can’t make the volley as it goes out of bounds.

84′ – Chivas USA 2-0 on a goal by Chijundi, Stepanovic with a great run with the ball at the defense and the pass to Chijundi who put it in the corner past Eylander. Seattle in serious trouble and will be glad to have Keller next week.

89′ – Seattle frantically trying to get something going but Chivas has everyone back and playing solid defense.

90′ – Chivas on the counterattack as they have controlled most of the second half. Seattle has had some chances but unable to convert on anything. 3 minutes of stoppage time.

90′+1 – Montero had an early chance but since then Chivas has done a good job of containing him.

90′+2 – Zakuani with another chance but Thornton makes a save.

90′+3 – Only a few seconds remain as Nyassi with a header that goes over the goal. The final whistle sounds and Chivas USA remain undefeated and beat Seattle 2-0 at home. Seattle are now on a 2 game losing streak and will need to find their form from the first 3 games as they’ve struggled recently.
