Live Blog: UEFA Cup – Hamburg at Manchester City

In earlier results, Dynamo Kiev beat Paris St-German 3-0 in the second leg, and advance to the semifinals 3-0 on aggregate.
1′ – The game starts with a strong crowd for Man City and hoping to recover from a disappointing loss to Fulham this past weekend.
3′ – A through ball to Robinho and he’s just offside, or otherwise it would have been an early goal for City. The replays show it was very close and Hamburg might have caught a break with that call.
6′ – Neither team with a serious scoring chance yet and a free kick for Hamburg from the left hand corner. It’s sent in but right at Given who makes the save.
8′ – Man City with pressure and several chances but Hamburg somehow escape without any damage. It was about 30 seconds of panic from Hamburg as they kept turning the ball over in their own end.
11′ – Zabaleta with a steal and a great run forward but his pass to Ireland is taken back by the defense.
12′ – It’s 1-0 for Hamburg as Guerrero scores, a cross was sent in, the Man City defense couldn’t clear and the ball deflected towards Guerrero who beat Given. 4-1 on aggregate for Hamburg.
14′ – A yellow card for Dunne.
15′ – A horrible start for City whose defense has continually let them down with mistakes.
16′ – A handball on Hamburg as Elano to take the penalty kick. 1-1 as Elano hits the corner and it’s now 4-2 on aggregate for Hamburg.
19′ – Caicedo with a chance on the counterattack but his pass his poor to Robinho and its taken back by the defense.
21′ – The home team with most of the momentum in the match but Hamburg have had some chances as the City defense has not been that sharp.
24′ – Elano with a cross to Ireland who tries for a running volley but its wide and off the side netting.
26′ – Man City can’t clear and Hamburg hold possession and Trochowski with a good shot that Given saves but concedes a corner.
27′ – Hamburg holding just about all possession the last 3-4 minutes as they earn another corner. It’s cleared by the defense and eventually a goal kick for Given.
30′ -Some great passing from City as Zabaleta nearly gets a breakaway in the box but the last touch is too far and goes out of bounds.
32′ – The home side putting pressure on Hamburg’s back 4 with several chances but they have yet to connect on the final pass. A shot by Caicedo but it had little power and was wide of goal.
35′ – Robinho with the ball and sends a low cross to Caicedo but Rost is there to prevent the shot.
39′ – A foul on Dunne but no card and he has to be careful with having a yellow already. City are controlling possession now and earn a free kick just outside the box.
40′ – Elano takes the kick and its cleared out by the defense.
41′ – Wayne Bridge with a great run and a shot on goal but it doesn’t have much power and Rost is there for the save.
43′ – A free kick earned by Robinho as Man City really knocking on the door for their second goal. It’s about 25-30 yards out and Elano hits the crossbar, an amazing shot that hit the crossbar.
45′ – Another bad challenge by Dunne who is lucky not to get his second yellow card as the referee gives him a warning.
45′+1 – Hamburg with possession but the referee blows the whistle and it’s 1-1 and 3-1 on aggregate for Hamburg.
46′ – The second half begins with Man City needing 2 unanswered goals to force extra time and 3 unanswered goal to reach the semifinals. A quick attack and Caicedo earns a corner and its cleared out by the defense and Hamburg on the counterattack.
48′ – The pace of the match is very fast and chances for both sides.
50′ – Ireland with a great play and a pass to Caicadeo who takes a dribble and pushes it in the corner for a goal, 2-1 Manchester City on Caicado’s goal, and Hamburg lead 3-2 on aggregate.
53′ – Tonight’s game seems to be almost a mirror of last weeks at Hamburg. The away side scores the first but the home team recovers and starts to take control.
54′ – Elano earns a free kick just outside the box and he will lineup for the kick, who hit the crossbar from the same distance in the 1st half. The kick is out and it hits the post again and that’s 2 free kicks he’s just missed by hitting the woodwork.
55′ – A corner sent in and there’s a great chance for City again but the shot is missed. Another goal seems imminent for the home side as Manchester are playing with loads of confidence right now.
56′ – A great backhell pass from Robinho to Zabaleta who gets a shot and Rost is there for a nice save that almost hit the back of the net.
59′ – Robinho chests a long ball down to his feet for the shot on a breakaway but the keeper Rost is there for the save. Kompany gives it a go from just outside the box but its over the net.
64′ – A frantic pace for the first 20 minutes of the second half as Man City are getting chances and clearly have the advantage in this match. They need at least one more goal to tie the aggregate score.
66′ – Bridge with a cross into the box and Robinho’s header is right at the Hamburg goalkeeper Rost.
68′ – Elano with anothe free kick but its deflected off the wall for a corner.
69′ – An Elano pass to Robinho and he collides with the keeper as both went for the ball.
70′- Rost is getting medial attention but is on his feet and ready to go with a goal kick.
75′ – Richard Dunne with another bad challenge and the Captain is sent off with his 2nd yellow card.
76′ – A free kick just outside the box for Hamburg but the shot is off target and Man City have to score another goal with 10 men.
77′ – Aogo with a shot that Given just gets a hand on to concede a corner. Fernandez is on and Zabaleta out for Manchester City.
78′ – Another corner earned for Hamburg but the header is off target by Guerrero.
80′ – Guerrero with a great individual effort to earn a corner for Hamburg, which is taken short as the away side is only about 10 minutes away from winning on aggregate.
82′ – City are looking a bit tired after dominating the chances and possession early in the second half but only getting 1 goal.
84′ – Olic with a chance in front of goal but Given makes a save to keep City’s hopes still alive. The ensuing corner is out of bounds and a goal kick.
85′ – Elano out and Sturridge in for Manchester City.
86′ – Robinho and Richards with a give and go but Richards volley is over the net and a bad miss.
88′ – 3 minutes plust stoppage time and Sturridge sends in a corner that is cleared out by Hamburg. A shot by Fernandez but its way off target.
89′ – Sturridge with a shot and its wide of the net but could have been trouble if it was on goal.
90′ – There will be 4 added minutes as City are putting just about everyone forward for a last gasp of a goal to force extra time.
90′+1 – Only a few minutes left as the crowd is urging on City to get the equalizer. Richards with a great play to earn a free kick as everyone gets in the box and its a poor ball sent in.
90′+3 – City unable to get possession back as Hamburg are wasting time and hold onto it as long as possible. Now there’s a Hamburg player on the ground with an injury and play is halted.
90′+4 – The final minute or so of time as its the last chance for City in attack. The final whistle is called and Hamburg win 4-3 on aggregate. A few chances from Man City that they couldn’t convert and Hamburg somehow held on for the win.
