It was a full week of games in Major League Soccer, with several teams playing 2 games. A few teams have climbed up the rankings, most noticably Kansas City, Toronto, and Real Salt Lake. Those on the decline are New England and New York. Here are the weekly Major League Soccer rankings as of April 27, 2009. Each teams ranking from last week is in parenthesis.
- Chivas USA (1) - Chivas had their first lost at Toronto but won at home on Saturday at Dallas. The team has only conceded three goals all season and is undefeated at home. They are the early season MLS Cup favorites.
- Seattle Sounders (4) – The Sounders snapped their 2 game losing streak with a 2-0 victory against San Jose at home on Saturday night. Steve Zakuani seems to have taken the starting position in left midfield from Sebastian Le Toux and has been one of the best rookies in the league so far.
- Toronto FC (11) – A great week for Toronto even without Dwayne De Rosario in the line-up and head coach John Carver resigning on Saturday. The team has been solid defensively and rookie goalkeeper had 2 clean sheets. The real question right now is, who will Toronto pick as their new head coach?
- Chicago Fire (2) – A tough start for Chicago at Columbus but they were able to rally with 2 late goals for a draw. The team has enough firepower to stay in any game but needs a consistent performance defensively to turn draws in wins.
- Real Salt Lake (7) – RSL has been unstoppable at home and exploded for 6 second half goals against the Revolution on Saturday. Javier Morales and Clint Mathis in the midfield have been key contributors to Salt Lake’s early season success.
- New England Revolution (3) – The Revolution were in the game at RSL until falling apart in the second half. New England have had several injuries and have the experience to recover from a crushing defeat on the road.
- Kansas City Wizards (6) – Kansas City won at home against New York, but struggled on the road at Toronto in a 0-1 loss. The team is improving but have not played well on the road.
- Colorado Rapids (5) – The Rapids had the game in hand against the Galaxy at home until conceding a late goal. Colorado has been an average team so far and has a decent shot at making the playoffs.
- DC United (9) – United stole a game at New York with several late goals. Luciano Emilio is returning to his MVP form of a few years ago and could lead DC United deep into the playoffs. When they are playing in form, DC can be as good as anybody.
- Houston Dynamo (10) – The Dynamo have a bye week and will be at New England next Sunday. With their first win of the season a week ago, Houston will look to continue the momentum.
- Los Angeles Galaxy (15) – One of two teams to not have a win this season, but they were able to salvage at draw at Colorado. Is Bruce Arena going to last the whole season? Should he have been hired in the first place?
- New York Red Bulls (9) – The Red Bulls lost 2 games this week and continue to disappoint. Angel is starting to get more chances and the team could be looking to make a few moves in the summer transfer window to shake things up.
- San Jose Earthquakes (12) – San Jose needs to improve their defense, as they’ve conceded 11 goals and scoring 7.
- Columbus Crew (13) – Can the Crew hold onto a lead at home? The team has been in position to win 3 home games and given up the lead in all of them. Is the absense of Sigi Schmid a bigger loss than anyone originally thuoght?
- FC Dallas (14) – To be fair, the last 4 teams on this list are fairly even, and Dallas has consistently been the worse with a negative 6 goal difference. Will the team let Kenny Cooper go to England in the summer and use the transfer fee to bring in some new players?
