Major League Soccer Power Rankings: Chivas USA and Chicago still the best, Houston surging
Another full week of games in Major League Soccer and Chivas USA and the Chicago Fire remain the top 2 teams. Both lead their respective conferences and continue to get results. Houston has continued their good form and climbed up the rankings and the Western Conference standings. KC was able to hold onto a draw after two red cards against Chivas and Toronto got another home victory. Here’s the results from this past weekend along with the latest MLS Rankings through May 25, 2009.

- Chivas USA – They were outplayed most of the game in KC (especially the second half) but were able to salvage a draw. Has anybody seen Sacha Kljestan? His stock has dropped quicker than pets.com. This team still gets results and has a comfortable lead in the Western Conference standings.
- Chicago Fire – Another win for the Fire who remain the only undefeated team in MLS. Will this team have enough left by October with aging superstars McBride and Blanco?
- Toronto FC – A nice home victory for Toronto has them only 2 points back of the Fire and tied with DC United for 2nd. It looks like this could be the year that Toronto makes the playoffs. BMO Field in October/November could be a great atmosphere.
- Seattle Sounders FC – A good draw at Colorado without Ljungberg has the Sounders still in second in the West. After a sizzling start, the team has struggled and needs to show more consistentcy.
- Houston Dynamo – The Dynamo are picking up momentum and now in 3rd place in the West. This team will be around in October and always seems to pick it up when summer arrives.
- Kansas City Wizards – KC looked like they would have a win against Chivas USA but a bad red card for Josh Wolff and second yellow for Hirsig killed those chances. At home, the team has been very good but the lack of discipline on Saturday needs to be addressed.
- DC United – A draw at home against RSL was disappointing as DC seems to close teams out. With the amount of talent on the roster, they should make the playoffs, but will it happen?
- Colorado Rapids – The Rapids earned a draw at home and now sit 4th in the Western Conference standings. Conor Casey scored another goal and is tied for the league lead. If the Rapids make the playoffs, he’ll be in the running for MVP.
- Los Angeles Galaxy – This team has only 1 loss but 8 draws. Will Beckham provide a spark to make a playoff run?
- Real Salt Lake – The Good news: They didn’t lose on the road and snapped a four game road losing streak, The Bad News: They didn’t score at DC and haven’t scored on the road this season.
- Columbus Crew – The Crew were off this weekend and play two games next week.
- New England Revolution – The Revolution have been unable to get any momentum going this season. Taylor Twellman remains injured in a team that has scored a league low 8 goals.
- New York Red Bulls – Where’s the offense for this team? With a striker like Angel, you’d think they’d be able to score more than 10 goals in 11 games.
- FC Dallas – Hey, they aren’t last anymore as they earned a draw this weekend. Still a very long way for this team to go to have any chance of making the playoffs.
- San Jose Earthquakes – What can you say about San Jose? A -10 goal differential and no points earned on the road. They are in a battle with FC Dallas for the worst team and it’s neck and neck so far.
