UEFA Cup Recap – Shakhtar defeats Dynamo, and Werder Bremen beats Hamburg
The final of the UEFA Cup were determined on Thursday with the second legs of the semifinals. Here’s a recap of both games with the final set to be played May 20th in Istanbul.
Shakhtar wins on a late goal to win 3-2 on aggregate –
Shakhtar Donetsk defeated Dynamo Kiev 2-1 in the second leg of the UEFA Cup semifinals on goals from Rodrigues Jadson and Junior Ilsinho. Dynamoe were able to get an away goal as Ismael Bangoura scored in the 47th minute. The game was tied late until Ilsinho’s goal came in the 88th minute to give the home side a ticket to the UEFA Cup Finals on a 3-2 aggregate win.
Werder Bremen beats Hamburg – 3-3 aggregate on away goals –
A thrilling match that saw Werder Bremen advance on away goals in a 3-3 aggregate score. After being down 0-1 in the first leg at home, Werder Bremen rallied at Hamburg with 3 away goals from Diego, Pizarro, and Baumann. Hamburg took the early lead with a goal from Olic but couldn’t hold onto the lead. Being down 1-3, Olic scored another goal in th 87th minute but it Bremen were able to hold on for the win and a place in the UEFA Cup Finals.
