Italy defeats the United States 3-1 – Video Highlights – The United States took an early lead but couldn’t hold on as Italy stormed back in the 2nd half to win 3-1 in the group stage of the FIFA 2009 Confederations Cup.
Italy were the favorites heading into the match and seemed poised to take control when Ricardo Clark was given a red card in the 33rd minute for a late tackle, but the United States were able to strike first. Landon Donovan scored off a penalty kick after Giorgio Chiellin was called for fouling Jozy Altidore.
As the second half started the US tried to hold onto a lead playing with only 10 men. Giuseppi Rossi, actually born in the US but chose to play for Italy, scored 2 goals to lead Italy back to a 3-1 win. The first was in the 58th minute and the last in the 90th minute. Daniele De Rossi scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute. Italy is now in great shape to advance and should be good shape with a victory against Egypt, who they face next. The United States on the other hand have a tough road ahead and will probably need a minimum of 4 points to advance as they face Brazil on Thursday.
