South Africa tops New Zealand 2-0

FIFA 2009 Confederations Cup hosts South Africa moved beat New Zealand 2-0 on Wednesday and now have 4 points through 2 games of group play. South Africa earned a draw on Sunday with Iraq and will face group leaders Spain in their final group match. Even if they are unable to get a point they have a decent chance to earn the 2nd semifinal spot. Spain currently leads the group with 6 points, South Africa with 4, Iraq with 1, and New Zealand with none. The two goals for South Africa were scored by Bernard Parker, one in the 20th minute and the next in the 51st minute. The match was dominated by the home team as New Zealand had no shots on goal and never seemed to be able to sustain any attack. New Zealand has no chance at making the semifinals but could play a spoiler role against Iraq in their last match.
