Major League Soccer Power Rankings: CLB, SEA, RSL, and LA all move up

It was another light schedule with SuperLiga matches taking place this weekend. There were 2 matches on Saturday and 2 on Sunday with several teams continuing to recover from bad starts. After a bad start, the Columbus Crew have found their form from last season as they stand 2nd in the Eastern Conference. Over in the West, Real Salt Lake is only 2 points behind Colorado for 4th and the Galaxy are only 3 points back. Here’s the latest Major League Soccer Power Rankings through Monday June 29, 2009.

  1. Seattle Sounders FC – Seattle seems to have recovered from a slump last month and has been solid at home. Ljungberg has been a All-Star midfielder for the Sounders who should be well represented in that game.
  2. Chivas USA – Chivas USA is playing in the SuperLiga and had a bye week in MLS. Preki has his time 2nd in the Western Conference but they’ve struggled in June and need to regain their early season form.
  3. Houston Dynamo – Houston was rolling but lost at LA to lose their number 1 spot. The Dynamo are in good shape and the favorites right now to win the MLS Cup.
  4. Columbus Crew – Finally the team has shown their form that carried them all the way to the MLS Cup last season. Last season’s champions are hitting their stride at the right time and Schelotto provides timely goals.
  5. DC United – A bye week for DC who still remain top of the Eastern Conference. DC has the league lead in goals for (25) but also has conceded (24).
  6. Chicago Fire – Chicago has had a bye playing in the SuperLiga this week. Unlike most teams, Chicago struggles at home and had performed well on the road. If they can pick it up at Toyota Park, they could be the most dangerous team in the East.
  7. Real Salt Lake – A good win for RSL at home in front of a solid home crowd (18,000+) at Rio Tinto stadium.
  8. Kansas City Wizards – KC played in the SuperLiga and had a bye week in MLS. The Wizards are currently 5th in a very crowded Eastern Conference.
  9. Los Angeles Galaxy – A good win for the Galaxy who are finally starting to show some cause for optimism.
  10. Colorado Rapids – A bad week for the Rapids who drew with Dallas at home and were completely outclassed at Seattle.
  11. New England Revolution – New England played in the SuperLiga and had a nice win. They had a bye in MLS but are finally healthy and should make a run. It is possible they will lead the Eastern Conference in late September.
  12. Toronto FC – A mixed week for TFC who won on Wednesday but lost on the weekend at Salt Lake. If they can improve their away form, they should be in contention for a playoff spot.
  13. FC Dallas – A nice win last week and a draw at Colorado but they continue to be far from a playoff spot. Will they add any players to the roster during the summer or stick with their current roster?
  14. San Jose Earthquakes – A bye week for the Earthquakes who are at the bottom of the West with 12 points. Has Bobby Convey been a bust to so far?
  15. New York Red Bulls – Is there any team that continually disappoints its fans this season? They’ve shown flashes of brilliance but continue to be unable to score goals on a regular basis. Can someone please give Angel some help in the attack?
