Major League Soccer Power Rankings: Houston stays on top
The Major League Soccer season is nearing the half-way point and the Houston Dynamo continue their hot streak to stay atop this week’s power rankings. Columbus and Los Angeles both got much needed wins on the road and Chivas continues it dominance in the Western Conference. Overall, the Eastern Conference is extremely close with 6 teams within 6 points of each other. In the West, its Chivas still with a 6 point lead atop the table, followed by Houston with 21, and Seattle tied with Colorado at 17 points. With 30 games in the season, most teams have plenty of time to earn a playoff spot. Here’s the latest Major League Soccer Power Rankings through June 8, 2009.
- Houston Dynamo – This team has been on fire and could catch Chivas USA in a few weeks. Only 7 goals allowed all year by the Dynamo.
- Chivas USA – Another solid victory for Chivas who continue to get results and lead the Western Conference. Their goal differential of +9 is the best in the league.
- DC United – A home win for DC has them just 2 points behind Chicago. They are arguably the deepest team in the league and could teak the East lead in a few weeks.
- Chicago Fire – The Fire continue to struggle at home and their offense has been terrible. Only 5 goals in 6 home games.
- Colorado Rapids – The Rapids earned a point at RSL without Conor Casey and are now tied with Seattle at 17 points. If they can continue to get points on the road, they will make the playoffs.
- Seattle Sounders FC – Seattle has struggled to get wins in that last month and lost at Chivas. Can this team recover and challenge for the Western Conference lead?
- Columbus Crew – Schelotto is pushing hard for another MVP as he scored 2 against KC on the weekend. The team is finally starting to play consisten soccer and now in 3rd in the East.
- New England Revolution – The Revolution finally are getting healthy and starting to show their form of previous seasons. The team is on the rise and will make the playoffs if they can avoid further injuries.
- Kansas City Wizards – The Wizards lost at home to Columbus and have struggled in recent weeks. It’s hard to predict how this team will perform form week to week.
- Los Angeles Galaxy – The Galaxy are finally starting to get a few wins instead of draws and now in contention for a playoff spot in the West. Landon Donovan will be gone for most of the next month or too with the National Team. Can the Galaxy stay in contention until Donovan and Beckham are done with International matches?
- Toronto FC – Another loss for Toronto who only a month ago looked very impressive at BMO Field. Consistency is a problem as Toronto has been up and down all season.
- Real Salt Lake – RSL got a draw at home and has stalled recently with poor performances. Their stellar home record is slipping and they only have 1 point on the road.
- FC Dallas – 5, 724 for a home game? Really? Well with how this team has played this season I can see why there was less than 6,000 for this match.
- San Jose Earthquakes – A draw at Dallas was a small victory as it was their first point on the road. A playoff spot seems out of reach unless they catch fire.
- New York Red Bulls – The Red Bulls have only scored 12 goals this season, the lowest in all of MLS. They’ve also conceded 22, and cannot consistently utilize Juan Pablo Angel in the attack. A very disappointing season so far.
