It was a light schedule this weekend with the SuperLiga beginning this weekend. Houston still remains in the top spot while the New York Red Bulls remain in last place and seem unlikely to return to the MLS Cup Finals. The Eastern Conference remains very crowded while Chivas USA and Houston have a little breathing room in the Western Conference. Here are the latest Major League Soccer Power Rankings through June 22, 2009.
- Houston Dynamo – A draw against RSL is a bit disappointing but they remain the best team in the league with 28 points. Can they sustain it or will go through a dry spell like Chivas USA?
- Chivas USA – They’ve struggled recently but still are 2nd in the West with 27 points. Sacha Kljestan has been disappointing this season but will he stay for the entire season? Has his stock gone down where Celtic or another team will get a transfer at a more affordable price?
- Chicago Fire – The Fire played in SuperLiga and won as they remain near the top in the Eastern Conference. A very experienced side as Brian McBride continues to be one of the best strikers in the league.
- DC United – After a so-so start, DC has been near the top of the Eastern Conference. A deep team that is the early favorite to come out of the East and reach the MLS Cup Final. Luciano Emilio and Jaime Moreno have been a big reason for DC’s success. The real question is when will this team get their own stadium?
- Seattle Sounders FC – Seattle was the better team for most of the game against NY but failed to convert on chances. They are 3rd in the Western Conference and need to improve their away form.
- Colorado Rapids – A nice win for the Rapids who were playing without star striker Conor Casey. They currently have a +6 goal differential at home.
- Kansas City Wizards – The Wizards played in the SuperLiga this week and remain 3rd in the Eastern Conference standings.
- Real Salt Lake – A draw on the road for RSL is a good sign as they had struggled all season away from Rio Tinto stadium. The attendance at home has started to pick up as well so things are looking up for RSL.
- Toronto FC – A bye week for TFC who need to find some consistency. Also, is Dichio the answer at striker or should Barrett get another chance?
- Columbus Crew – After a good streak from Columbus they struggled at FC Dallas on Saturday. Schelotto needs some help in the attack with consistent performances from the forwards and other midfield.
- New England Revolution – The Revolution had a good win in SuperLiga but remain in 6th place in the Eastern Conference. They are finally getting healthy and Shalrie Joseph is arguably the best midfielder in the entire league.
- FC Dallas – A win against Columbus has FC Dallas slowly improving as the season progresses. The attendance remains pathetic at home, with only about 8,000 at Saturday’s game. If you are Kenny Cooper would you stay in Dallas or go play in Europe?
- San Jose Earthquakes – Finally, a win for the Earthquakes who have the talent and roster to compete for a playoff spot.
- Los Angeles Galaxy – So maybe its a bit harsh to move them behind the Earthquakes after one game but this team has not been very good this season. Yes, they haven’t lost many but they also haven’t been able to get leads or consistently win in MLS. Anyone seen David Beckham in LA yet? or Landon Donovan?
- New York Red Bulls –
