The CONCACAF Champions League Qualifying round continued Thursday night with three matches. Here’s the recap of all three matches along with video highlights.
W Connection draws with New York Red Bulls 2-2 -Video Highlights
W Connection grabbed a first half lead but had to come from behind with a second half goal to salvage a 2-2 draw against the NY Red Bulls at home. Connection took a 1-0 lead on a 40th minute goal from Jonathan Fana. The Red Bulls responded in the second half with goals by Dane Richards in the 47th minute and Ernst Oebster in the 59th minute. Down 1-2 Connection found the equalizer with a goal from Hughtun Hector as the match would end 2-2. The second leg will be next week at Giants Stadium in New York.
Club Deportivo Olimpia beats Club Deportivo Arabe Unido 2-1 – Video Highlights
Arabe Unido grabbed an early 1-0 lead but Olimpia came from behind at home to win 2-1. Publio Rodriguez scored for Arabe Unido in the 18th minute as the road team had a lead at halftime. Fortunately for Olimpia they were able to find some goals in the second half as Jocimar Nascimento converted a penalty kick in the 48th minute and Everaldo Ferriera scored the game-winner in the 56th minute. The second leg will take place next week at Aribe Unido.
Cruz Azul beats Herediano 6-2 – Video Highlights
Mexican side Cruz Azul scored 6 away goals and is in great shape to advance heading into the second leg. Azul was led by a hat trick from Javier Antonio Orozco Penuelas who scored in the 49th, 57th, and 74th minutes. Herediano was in trouble from the start as they conceded a 2nd minute goal to Cruz Azul, scored by Alejandro Vela. A red card early in the second half to Eduardo Gomez of Herediano proved to be the difference as the defense struggled from that point, conceding 5 goals. Emanuel Vila and Pablo Zeballos added the other goals for Cruz Azul while Jose Guity and Andy Herron scored the goals for Herediano. The second leg will be hosted by Cruz Azul.
