CONCACAF 2009 Gold Cup Recap: Canada edges Jamaica 1-0, El Salvador tops Costa Rica 2-1

It was the first day of matches in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup with Group A playing. In the first match at the Home Depot Center, Canada defeated Jamaica 1-0 and in the second match El Salvador defeated Costa Rica 2-1. Here’s a recap both matches.

Canada edges Jamaica 1-0

Canada moved to 1-0 in group play with a 74th minute goal from Ali Gerba against Jamaica on Friday night. The match was fairly even as both teams had similar offensive stats. Gerba has just signed with Toronto FC and played the past season with MK Dons in the English League One. Overall it was a very close match and Canada moved into great position to advance to the quarterfinals.

El Salvador tops Costa Rica 2-1  El Salvador won a late goal from Osael Romero in the 85th minute to beat Costa Rica 2-1 in the group stage. Both teams were fairly even throughout the match but El Salvador took the lead early in the 1st half with a goal from Romero in the 19th minute. The first half ended a 1-0 lead for El Salvador who would not hold onto the lead in the 2nd half. A goal from Warren Granados in the 63rd minute tied the game as it looked like a possible draw. Fortunately for El Salvador, Romero’s 2nd goal of the match was the difference as they moved 1-0 and Costa Rica dropped to 0-1.
