CONCACAF 2009 Gold Cup Recap – Costa Rica and Canada draw 2-2, Jamaica edges El Salvador 1-0

It was the last day of matches Group A of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup with Canada against Costa Rica and Jamaica taking on El Salvador. Here’s a full recap.

Canada and Costa Rica draw 2-2 Canada and Costa Rica played to a 2-2 draw as all 4 goals were scored in the 1st half within a 12 minute stretch. Canada got goals from Patrice Pernier (24th minute) and Marcel De Jong (27th minute) while Costa Rica’s scores came from Andy Herron (22nd minute) and Walter Centeno (34th minute). Both teams have qualified for the quarterfinals as they played in the top 2 spots. The 2nd half was scoreless as both teams played a close and much tigher match after the 4 first half goals.

Jamaica edges El Salvador 1-0 – Jamaica kept their quarterfinal hopes alive on a 69th minute goal from Omar Cummings to defeat El Salvador 1-0. El Salvador has numerous chances in the match but couldn’t convert and will be disappointed to not reach at least the quarterfinals. Jamaica, who were winless coming into the match, are now in good position but have to wait for the other groups to finish to see if they earn a spot.
