European Transfer News: Man U to sign Michael Owen, Chelsea reject Man City bid for John Terry
Here’s the latest European Transfer news including Michael Owen going to Manchester United on a free transfer and Manchester City making a big for Chelsea star John Terry.
Michael Owen set to join Manchester United - Michael Owen looks set for a surprise move to Manchester United.
The England international is without a club following the expiry of his contract with Newcastle United and it appeared only Stoke City and Hull City were interested in offering him a contract.
But now it appears Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to snap up a player who is fourth in the all-time goalscorers list for his country.
Owen had a medical on his knee on Thursday and will have a full medical on Friday ahead of signing a pay-as-you-play deal with the Premier League champions.
United have been searching for a new forward since the departure of Carlos Tevez at the end of his loan deal. They had been linked with the likes of Karim Benzema and David Villa, but now it seems Owen will be arriving.
The 29-year-old suffered an injury-ravaged time at St James’ Park but still managed to score 10 goals as the Magpies dropped out of the Premier League.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker will be hoping a move to Old Trafford will push him back into the thoughts of England coach Fabio Capello ahead of next summer’s World Cup finals.
United, meanwhile, have sent 20-year-old Brazilian-born midfielder Rodrigo Possebon on a season-long loan to Portuguese side Braga. – ESPNSoccerNet.com -http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=658825&sec=transfers&cc=5901
Chelsea reject Manchester City bid for John Terry - Chelsea have confirmed that they have rejected a second offer from Manchester City for captain John Terry.
Money-rich City made an unsuccessful bid for the England skipper last season and they have again failed in their attempts to bring the centre-back to Eastlands.
The size of the offer has not been revealed, but Chelsea insist that Terry is not for sale and that the 28-year-old is totally committed to the cause at Stamford Bridge.
A statement on the club’s official website said: “We can confirm we have completely rejected an offer from Manchester City for John Terry.
“It was made clear to City, for a second time following an approach last season, that we would not entertain any conversation on the subject.
“At the time John also reiterated his total commitment to Chelsea.
“We would like to make it clear, and will not do so again, that John is not for sale.” – SkySports.com - http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_5412824,00.html
