The standings continue to change in Major League Soccer as teams go through hot and cold streaks in the long season. Seattle is now back in the number one spot, which they held for the first few weeks of the season, and other teams like the LA Galaxy are finally starting to get some wins. The East remains very crowded while New York is now 14 points out of a playoff spot. Here’s the latest Major League Soccer Power Rankings through Monday July 13, 2009.
- Seattle Sounders FC – They started off as number one, had a few rough patches, but have regained their form with a nice victory at home against the Houston Dynamo.
- Houston Dynamo – A loss at Seattle moves then from the top spot but they remain one of the top teams and still first in the West with 31 points.
- Toronto FC – A nice home win has TFC tied with Chicago for the lead in the East. If Chad Barrett continues to produce they will be a very dangerous team.
- Columbus Crew – A solid draw on the road has the Crew just a point back of Chicago. They only have one win on the road and will need to improve to win the Eastern Conference again.
- Chicago Fire – It’s mind-boggling that this team has only scored 5 goals at home but 18 on the road. If their home form was close to their away form, they’d be the best team in the league.
- Chivas USA – They’ve stalled after being the best team for the first few months and now are in 3rd in the West.
- DC United – A bye week for DC who are 3rd place in the very crowded Eastern Conference standings.
- Los Angeles Galaxy – A nice win for the Galaxy who’ve been in good form and will have David Beckham arrive for the 2nd half of the season. Can they keep the momentum going?
- Colorado Rapids – Another home win for Colorado but it was only in front of 8,128 people. They’ve been a solid team all season but are in the stacked Western Conference which could leave them just out of the playoffs in October.
- Kansas City Wizards – The Wizards are missing Arnaud, Espizona, and Conrad to the Gold Cup but still were able to get a draw against the Revolution.
- New England Revolution – The Revolution were unable to get a win against KC and continues to struggle offensively. You know you’re offense is bad when you have scored as many goals as the NY Red Bulls (at least NE still has a few games in hand to change that).
- Real Salt Lake – A bye week for RSL who are only 4 points back of 4th place Colorado and have the team to make the playoffs.
- FC Dallas – Surprisingly, Dallas is not too far out of a playoff spot and has had a few decent results recently. There still is a glimmer of hope left (as long as they don’t let Kenny Cooper go to Europe).
- San Jose Earthquakes – They’ve shown flashes that they can compete with other teams but were thoroughly outplayed by Toronto on Saturday.
- New York Red Bulls – The Red Bulls had a bye week and will face the Galaxy as its David Beckham’s first game back in MLS this season. Can they get a win and finally get their season on track?
