Americans Abroad in the England Carling Cup Recap and Video Highlights: Jozy Altidore scores, Spector, Hahnemann, and Grella
The English Carling Cup began its second round of play with several Americans playing in matches on Tuesday August 25, 2009. The most noticable was recent Hull City signee Jozy Altidore who scord his first goal for the club. Other Americans playing were Jonathan Spector for West Ham, Marcus Hahnemann for Wolverhampton, and Mike Grella for Leeds United. Here’s a full recap along with video highlights.
Jozy Altidore (ST) – Hull City – English Carling Cup – beat Southend United 3-1 – 1 goal – Video Highlights
Altidore has been a success so far for Hull City as he scored his first goal in only his second game on Tuesday. Hull played a solid match to win 3-1 against Southend United at home in the Carling Cup. Altidore’s goal was an impressive 30 yard shot that beat the goalkeeper to the lower left corner. Jozy played the entire game and had 3 shots including the goal.
Marcus Hahnemann (GK) – Wolverhampton – English Carling Cup – beat Swindon Town 0-0 (6-5 on penalties) – Video Highlights
Hahnemann started and played the full match for Wolverhampton as they won at home in a penalty kick shoot-out. Both teams converted their first five penalties as it went into sudden death. The sixth round was converted by Wolverhampton and Swindon Town missed their sixth as Hahnemann got the victory.
Jonathon Spector (LB) – West Ham United – English Carling Cup – beat Millwall 3-1 – Video Highlights
Spector and West Ham had to scramble to win at home against Millwall but advanced with two goals in extra time. There was controversy outside of the match as there was violence that broke out between fans of both clubs. Spector played the full match, which ended up being 120 minutes with extra time.
Mike Grella (ST) – Leeds United – English Carling Cup – beat Watford 2-1 – Video Highlights
Grella got a rare start for Leeds as they beat Watford 2-1 at home. He played 83 minutes and earned an assist on a 38th minute goal by Robert Snodgrass. Overall, Grella is starting to slowly get more playing time and could be fighting for a regular spot in the starting lineup towards the end of this season.
