Americans Abroad in the French Ligue 1 and German Bundesliga: Saturday August 22, 2009 – Bocanegra, Davies, and Cherundolo
There were several Americans playing abroad in the top European leagues on Saturday including French Ligue 1 and the German Bundesliga. In France, Carlos Bocanegra continues to be a regular start for Stade Rennais as they challenge for a spot in European soccer next season while Charlie Davies is adjusting quickly to his new team Sochaux. Steve Cherundolo continues to play significant minutes for Hannover 96 as they got a nice road win on Saturday. Here’s a recap of these three players as they played in matches on Saturday.
Carlos Bocanegra (LB) – Stade Rennais – French Ligue 1 – 1-1 draw with Marseille – Video Highlights
Bocanegra continues to start and be a consistent player in the back four for Rennes who are in the middle of the table after three matches. They took an early lead on Saturday against Marseille but couldn’t hold it as the match ended at 1-1. He nearly had an assist in the match as he passed to Asamoah who hit the post with a header. Overall, Rennes has had good results early and has a decent chance at a Europa League spot.
Charlie Davies (ST) – Sochaux – French Ligue 1 – lost to Montpellier 0-2 – Video Highlights
After a great start, including two goals in last weeks match, Davies was in the starting lineup and played about 70 minutes. He earned several free kicks during the match and had a shot on goal but the team struggled to convert any chance. It seems they will be one of the clubs in the relegation battle as they are 1-0-2 so far on the season.
Steve Cherundolo (RB) – Hannover 96 – German Bundesliga – beat FC Nuremberg 2-0 – Video Highlights
Cherundolo played the whole game for Hannover as they got a nice road win on Saturday. Hannover had the better chances (7 shots on goal to 0 for Nuremberg) and is looking to improve on last season’s middle of the table position. He had no shots during the match.
