Americans Abroad Recap and Video Highlights: Kenny Cooper scores again, Dempsey, Friedel, Spector, and Howard
It’s been a busy weekend and Monday for Americans Abroad with several matches in Europe. In Germany for 1860 Munich of Bundesliga 2, Kenny Cooper scored again while Brad Friedel earned an impressive road win for Aston Villa. Tim Howard once again had little support from his offense as Everton fell while Jonathan Spector struggled for West Ham. Finally, Clint Dempsey and Fulham were overmatched against Chelsea and lost as well. Here’s a full recap of these matches along with video highlights.
Kenny Cooper (ST) – 1860 Munich – Bundesliga 2 – lost to Karlsruhe 1-3 – Video Highlights
Cooper scored his second goal for 1860 Munich but they lost to Karlsruhe 1-3 on Monday. The American scored the opening goal as he received a pass outside the box, cut back, and beat the keeper with a low shot near the post. Overall, he’s adjusted well to the Bunesliga 2 and could be attracting attention for a transfer to a bigger league in the Winter transfer window.
Brad Friedel (GK) – Aston Villa - English Premier League – beat Liverpool 3-1 – Video Highlights
Friedel was solid in goal for Villa as they defeated Liverpool at Anfield in an upset. The team looked has looked sluggish at times but put together a great match on Monday. Friedel made some key saves and helped provide leadership for the team. He continues to be a solid goalkeeper who can keep his team in almost any match.
Clint Dempsey (MF) – Fulham – English Premier League – lost to Chelsea 0-2 – Video Highlights
Dempsey and Fulham lost to an in-form Chelsea team 0-2 on Sunday. The American played the full match and instead of his regular attacking midfield role, was up front of a center forward position. He had no shots on goal and Fulham struggled to get many great chances against a solid Chelsea side. The team will be playing in the Europa League second leg of the Play-Off round on Thursday with a 3-0 lead.
Tim Howard (GK) – Everton – English Premier League – lost to Burnley 0-1 – Video Highlights
Howard and Everton lost again despite having possession and getting 25 shots in the match. The American goalkeeper made two saves in the match and has had little help from the defense or offense during the season. Everton failed to convert a penalty kick which would have resulted in a draw. It’s been a tough start for Everton but Howard has little blame as the team has been poor in front of him.
Jonathan Spector (LB) – West Ham – English Premier League – lost to Tottenham 1-2 – Video Highlights
Spector started and played the full match for West Ham as they fell to Tottenham Hotspur at home on Sunday. He played a decent game but made a poor defensive play that led to the game winning goal for Tottenham. Overall, Spector only played 5 matches last season for West Ham but will need to find his form to continue to get significant playing time.
