The 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League began its Group Stage on Tuesday August 18, 2009 with three matches. The Columbus Crew v Puerto Rico Islanders, CD Marathon v DC United, and Pumas UNAM v Comunicaciones.

Columbus Crew beats PR Islanders 2-0

The Columbus Crew continued their great form with a solid 2-0 victory at home to open the group stage against the Puerto Rico Islanders. The home side had the better chance throughout the match but neither team was able to convert in the first 45 minutes as it was 0-0 at halftime. The second half saw Columbus score two goals and seal the victory. The first was from Steven Lenhart in the 57th minute and the second from Robbie Rogers in the 78th minute.

UNAM Pumas edges Comunicaciones 1-0

Pumas won 1-0 at home against Comunicaciones to open the Group Stage. Despite getting several chances and having the possession advantage, UNAM could not score only one goal in the match. The goal came in the second half, in the 70th minute from Luis Fuentes. Comunicaciones had only 1 shot on goal and 2 shots in the entire match while UNAM had 7 on goal and 13 overall.

CD Marathon tops DC United 3-1

Marathon scored two late goals in the second half to win at home against DC United in the opening match of the Group Stage. The match started out fairly even as Marathon took the lead on a 23rd minute goal from Walter Martinez only to have DC United tie it up early in the 2nd half with a 48th minute Luciano Emilio goal. The match would remain tied at 1-1 until the 78th minute when Marathon would pull away. A goal by Jerry Palacios in the 78th minute and another from Mario Berrios in the 87th minute clinched the victory for Marathon.
