World Cup Qualifying for South Africa 2010 continued in the UEFA Region with several key matches taking place. A few of the top teams played on Wendesday including Germany, Scotland, Norway, and France. Here’s a recap of some of the matches from Wednesday’s qualifying.
France edges Faroe Islands 1-0 – Video Highlights
France struggled to get goals against the Faroe Islands but still won 1-0. The goal came from Andre Pierre Gignac in the 42nd minute as France is looking to catch Serbia in the group standings. They are currently 5 points behind with a game in hand.
Germany beats Azerbaijan 2-0 – Video Highlights
Germany topped Azerbaijan on goals from Schwiensteiger (12th minute) and Klose (54th minute) to win 2-0 on Wednesday. With the victory the Germans remain on top in Group 4 and remain on good shape to win automatic qualification by placing first.
Norway crushes Scotland 4-0 – Video Highlights
Norway easily defeated Scotland 4-0 and improved their chances of qualification on Wednesday. Scotland struggled and received a red card in the 34th minute (Gary Caldwell) while the match was still 0-0. After that point, Norway scored 4 unanswered goals, including the first from John Arne Riise in the 35th minute. The other goals came from Pedersen (45th minute), Huseklepp (60th minute), and another goal from Pedersen in the 90th minute. Scotland still had a chance to qualify but they will need to finish strong in the group stage.
