UEFA Champions League Qualifying Recap – Celtic and Ventpils advance

Russia Soccer Champions LeagueUEFA Champions League 3rd round of Qualifying finished up on Wednesday with 10 teams advancing to the next stage. Here’s a recap of Celtic v Dinamo Moscow and Bate Borisov v FK Ventspils.

Celtic gets a road win to advance past Dinamo Moscow 2-1 on aggregate

Scottish club Celtic were down 0-1 after the first leg at home and needed a strong performance at Moscow in the 2nd leg. Fortunately they were able to get a late goal in the 1st half and then the game winner late in the 2nd half as they advance 2-1 on aggregate. Scott McDonald scored the first on a header in the 43rd minute while Georgios Samaras scored the second in the 90th minute. It was a much needed victory for Celtic who are hoping to reach the group stage.

FK Ventspils advances past Bate Borisov 2-2 on aggregate (away goals)

Latvian side FK Ventspils edged Belarusian Bate Borisov on 1 away goal as it was 2-2 on aggregate. Both teams were able to win at home, Ventspils 2-0 and Bate 2-1, but the away goal in the second leg was the difference. Goals for Bate were from Krivets in the 43rd and 57th minute while Ventspils had one from Tigirlas in the 14th minute.
