UEFA Champions League Qualifying Recap – Maccabi, Anderlecht, Salzburg, Sporting, and Panathinaikos advance
The 2009-10 Champions League Qualifying third round wraps up this week as the second legs took place. On Tuesday five teams advanced to the next round of qualifying. Here’s a recap of the matches on Tuesday.
Maccabi Haifa FC advances past FK Atobe 4-3 on aggregate
It was 0-0 after the first leg and Maccabi had to come from behind to advance 4-3 on aggregate. The home team got down 3-0 within the first 15 minutes but were able to climb their way back with 4 unanswered goals.
Anderlecht advances past Sivasspor 6-3 on aggregate
Anderlecht was ahead 5-0 heading into the second leg and Sivasspor was only able to make up 2 goals with a 3-1 win on Tuesday. With a strong showing in the first leg Anderlecht secured they would be advancing to the next round.
FC Salzburg advances past Dinamo Zagreb 3-2 on aggregate
Salzburg was able to get a 2-1 win on the road in the second leg against Zagreb as they won 3-2 on aggregate. After a 1-1 score in the first leg, Salzburg had goals from Svento (33rd minute) and Nelisse (83rd minute) to win the match and the tie.
Sporting Lisbon advances past FC Twente 1-1 on aggregate
Sporting came from behind to win 1-1 on an away goal in stoppage time to stun FC Twente on Tuesday. Twente appeared to have the match in hand as they scored in the 2nd minute and held Sporting for most of the match. With just a few moments remaining Lisbon had a corner that was headed onto goal and deflected off Twente player Wisgerhof for an own goal.
Panathinaikos advances past Sparta Prague 4-3 on aggregate
Greek side Panathinaikos came from a 1-3 deficit after the first leg with a solid 3-0 victory to secure their place in the next round of qualifying. The home side had goals from Jose Sarriegi, Katsouranis, and Salpingidis.
