Americans Abroad Recap – Bocanegra, Davies, Cooper, and Cherundolo

bocanegraIt was another full weekend of matches for Americans playing abroad in the top European leagues. In the French Ligue 1, Carlos Bocanegra was with Stade Rennais and Charlie Davies for Sochaux. Steve Cherundolo for Hannover 96 played in the German Bundesliga while Kenny Cooper continues to have an impact for Bundesligs 2 side 1860 Munich. Here’s a recap of these players in this weekend’s matches along with video highlights for each match.

Carlos Bocanegra (LB) – Stade Rennais – French Ligue 1  - draw with Lens 2-2

Bocanegra and Rennes got a draw at Lens with a 90th minute goal from Asamoah. The American played the full match but had not shots on goals. He continues to be a regular starter for the club as they are currently in the middle of the table but looking to earn a spot in European soccer for next season.

Charlie Davies (ST) – Sochaux – French Ligue 1 – beat AS Monaco 1-0

Davies started and played 85 minute for Sochaux as they beat Monaco 1-0. The goal came off a penalty kick converted by Sverkos but was earned by Davies. He continues to impress in France and should retain his spot in the starting lineup. Besides earning the penalty that set up the game winning goal, Davies had a shot on goal and earned a few free kicks.

Steve Cherundolo (RB) – Hannover 96 – German Bundesliga – lost to Hoffenheim 0-1

Cherundolo played the full match for Hannover as they lost to Hoffenheim 0-1 at home. He won a few free kicks in the match but had no shots or assists. Hannover 96 is 13th in the league table and could be in a relegation battle if the first four matches are any indicator.

Kenny Cooper (ST) – 1860 Munich – German Bundesliga 2 – draw with Ahlen 0-0

Cooper started and played the full math for 1860 Munich but they failed to score against Ahlen. He had two shots during the match with one on goal. After only four matches since transferring from FC Dallas, Cooper has two goals and adjusting well to his new team.
