CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Recap – Saturday, September 5, 2009
The United States, Honduras and Mexico all got much needed wins as they are the top three spots in the hexagonal standings. Costa Rica was leading the group but got crushed by Mexico 0-3 at home and will have a tough last three matches in qualifying. Mexico, who had been struggling, seems to have found their groove and was looking strong with their win at Costa Rica.
The United States, who lost at Mexico in August, responded at home with a gritty 2-1 win against El Salvador. The Americans are in good shape with a match against Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday. Honduras won at home and should be in a battle with Costa Rica for the last automatic spot. The USA and Mexico appear likely to take the top two spots as they have favorable schedule remaining and haven’t lost at home. All the teams will be in action on Wednesday with another set of matches.
