FC Barcelona beats Racing Santander 4-1: Recap and Video Highlights
There were two Spanish Primera Division (La Liga) matches on Tuesday as Sevilla took on Mallorca and FC Barcelona faced Racing Santander. Barcelona has started out strong and looks ready to challenge for the UEFA Champions League and La Liga trophies. Barcelona started out dominating the match with most of the chances and possession. Racing Santander held them off for about 20 minutes before the flood gates opened. Newly signed Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in the 20th minute as he connected on a header that deflected off the defense and past the goalkeeper. It was only a few minutes later when Lionel Messi added to the lead with a brilliant goal. It was a combination of great passing and Messi was wide open for a shot inside the box that he didn’t miss.
It would get worse for Racing as Barcelona scored again 27th minute to make it 3 goals in 7 minutes. Some great passing again led to a wide open Gerard Pique who easily scored to make it 3-0. The next 15 or so minutes were quiet for Barcelona as Racing was able to hold them off and get a rare chance here and there. However in the last minute of stoppage time in the first half Messi nearly scored another. It would end at 3-0 for Barcelona after the first 45 minutes.
The second half was more of the same as Barcelona controlled the match and Racing Santander never seemed to have a chance to comeback or score a goal. Lionel Messi would add another goal in the 63rd minute to make it 4-0. Racing finally broke through the defense of Barca and scored to give the home crowd something to cheer about. It was a fantasic shot that hit off the crossbar as Oscar Serrano scored in the 72nd minute.
As the match dragged on, it was similar to Barca’s weekend victory as they were a bit sloppy in the second half and gave a few more chances to Racing. Overall, Barcelona had the match in hand after the first 30 minutes and cruised to victory for the rest of the match.
While they’ve conceded some 2nd half goals and let down defensively in some matches, they’ve still won those rather easily. It’s almost inevitable to let down a little when you’re dominating 4-0 or 3-0 in a match.
