The Week 26 Major League Socer Power Rankings have had some significant changes from last week. The Columbus Crew have the top spot with a win over Houston while the Los Angeles Galaxy dropped after a disappointing 3-6 lost to Dallas. Other teams moving up are FC Dallas and the Kansas City Wizards who both got much needed wins. Overall, no team has yet to clinch a playoff spot or fall out contention (except for the NY Red Bulls).
It was a good week for the road times in MLS as three won (Dallas, KC, and Seattle). The Sounders beat DC United again on the road, after they defeated them at RFK only a week earlier in the US Open Cup Final. The two teams that played two matches this weekend were 1-1-0. DC United beat the Wizards on Wednesday but lost to Seattle. The KC Wizards rebounded after their loss to DC United with a win against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
Here are the latest Major League Soccer Power Rankings for Week 26 through Monday, September 14, 2009.
- Columbus Crew – Another solid win at home as they have yet to lose there and should clinch a playoff spot with a few more victories.
- Seattle Sounders FC – The Sounders seem to have found their form from the early season and back to third in the Western Conference. Fredy Montero now has 11 goals on the season and seems destined to be playing in Europe next season
- Chicago Fire – The Fire have Brian McBride back but were without Blanco on Saturday as they drew at RSL. They are in good position with 39 points through 25 matches.
- Houston Dynamo – The Dynamo almost had a draw at Columbus but gave up a late penalty. They have Champions League matches coming up and will have to find consistency with a lot of matches in the last month.
- Los Angeles Galaxy – The loss to Dallas was embarassing and a sign of the Galaxy from recent years but it is only one game and they are still in great shape to make the playoffs.
- Chivas USA – Another win for Chivas USA who survived a horrible drop in form in the middle of the season. They have been solid defensively but offensively need players to step up.
- DC United – If they had any consistent defense, United would be challenging for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. DC could be the most dangerous team if they get into the playoffs because of their quality in midfield.
- Toronto FC – A nice win for Toronto over the Rapids that was badly needed. They still have a -3 goal difference and won’t be able to rely on outscoring teams (3-2 on Saturday) if they want to make the playoffs.
- Colorado Rapids – A loss at Toronto for Colorado but they are still 4th in the Western Conference. As with most teams, they are dominant at home but terrible on the road. Conor Casey leads MLS with 13 goals and should be getting MVP consideration.
- FC Dallas – The offense is starting to click for Dallas and Jeff Cunningham is now gunning for the league lead in goals. If they can find some defense, there’s an outside shot they can make the playoffs. Who would have thought they’d improve after letting Kenny Cooper transfer to Germany?
- Kansas City Wizards – A mixed week as they lost one but recovered to get a win at NY. Josh Wolff has gone under the radar but continues to score goals and carry the offensive load for the Wizards.
- Real Salt Lake – They only managed a draw at home against Chicago and remain on the edge of the playoffs with 34 points.
- New England Revolution – The Revolution are very much alive in the playoff race and struggled Saturday without suspended player Shalrie Joseph. They have 33 points but have only played 23 matches.
- San Jose Earthquakes – They still have several games in hand on most teams so a late run to make the playoffs is still barely alive.
- New York Red Bulls – Not sure what there is to say about the worst team in the league. Will they finally the right manager for this club next year? Will the new Red Bull Arena help create better attendance and rejuvenate this franchise? A lot of questions and no answers yet.
