Major League Soccer Week 27 Power Rankings: Crew on top, Galaxy moves up
The Major League Soccer season continues into the last several weeks with the playoff race heating up. The Los Angeles Galaxy recovered with a nice 2-0 victory as David Beckham scored again. The Columbus Crew had a win over the Houston Dynamo and remained on top in the power rankings. The Kansas City Wizards won again to move back into the playoff picture as they now have 30 points.
Overall, the playoff picture is tighter than ever as the New York Red Bulls are the only team without a chance to earn a spot. San Jose is basically out unless they go on a winning streak. No team has clinched a playoff spot but there’s only 3-4 matches left in the season for most teams. Here are the latest Major League Power Rankings through Tuesday, September 22, 2009.
- Columbus Crew – The Crew earned a draw on the road at Chicago but still remain atop the Eastern Conference.. They have done well in the Champions League the only worry is tiring during the final weeks and the playoffs.
- Los Angeles Galaxy – The Galaxy won again as David Beckham scored and the team played a solid match. It seems this is the year they will finally qualify since singing the English star.
- Houston Dynamo – A win at Real Salt Lake as they remain in the top spot in the Western Conference.
- Chicago Fire – The Fire continue to be unable to get wins at home as they drew with the Crew on Sunday. They have a -2 goal differential at home and +7 on the road.
- Seattle Sounders FC – A disappointing draw at home for the Sounders who need to get wins at home. Their offense has struggled a bit in the last few months.
- Colorado Rapids – A draw on the road at San Jose keeps the Rapids in one of the playoff spots.
- Chivas USA – They earned a draw at Seattle and appear to be finding their form at the right time.
- DC United – A much needed bye week as they play in the Champions League in the midweek.
- Toronto FC – Toronto has been up and down as they lost at the Galaxy. They need to find some consistency and win all their home matches to make the playoffs for the first time.
- Real Salt Lake – If RSL misses the playoffs it will be due to their horrible away record. They’ve scored 9 goals on the road and 29 at home.
- Kansas City Wizards – The Wizards won again this weekend and are slowing moving their way back into the playoff race.
- New England Revolution – Last month the Revolution appeared ready climb up the Eastern Conference standings but they’ve had a few disappointing losses recently. They are still in good shape with a few games in hand on most other teams.
- FC Dallas – They have the best offense in the league (41 goals scored) but the worst defense (43 goals conceded). If they had any defense, they’d be near the top of the Western Conference standings.
- San Jose Earthquakes – They still have a slight chance alive to make the playoffs but have to win virtually all their remaining matches.
- New York Red Bulls – This team is looking forward next season with a new stadium opening and a chance to forget this disaster of a season (-22 goal differential).
