UEFA Champions League Power Rankings: Tuesday, September 22, 2009
The 90th Minute Soccer Blog is glad to announce the UEFA Champions League Power Rankings that will be released after each set of group stage matches. The rankings are based mainly on teams performance in the Champions League and not necessarily a reflection of their form in domestic or other competitions. This means that a team could theoretically be 3rd or 4th in their domestic league table but 1st or 2nd in the overall Champions League power rankings.
In the initial rankings, FC Barcelona, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Liverpool are at the top as they had good performances in their first group stage matches. AC Milan and Inter are also in the top 10 representing Italy but still have to prove they can compete with those other top teams from the Premiership and La Liga. Here’s are the power rankings.
- Manchester United
- FC Barcelona
- Chelsea
- Real Madrid
- Liverpool
- Arsenal
- AC Milan
- Bayern Munich
- Wolfsburg
- Sevilla
- Lyon
- Internazionale (Inter Milan)
- Juventus
- FC Porto
- Bordeaux
- Rangers
- Marseille
- Dynamo Kiev
- Olympiacos
- Fiorentina
- Stuttgart
- Atletico Madrid
- Besiktas
- Standard Liege
- APOEL FC
- AZ Alkmaar
- PFC CSKA Sofia
- Debrecen VSC
- FC Rubin Kazan
- FC Unirea Urziceni
- Maccabi Haifa FC
- FC Zurich
Now, the rankings are really an estimate as there’s only been one week of matches and hard to tell how good some teams are outside of the top 5. There’s clear a drop off from the bottom half to the top and several teams in the middle such as Lyon, Rangers, and Wolfsburg. The next set of rankings will be published on Thursday, October 1, 2009.
