Argentina needed a win to guarantee a spot (depending on results, they could qualify with less) in next summer’s FIFA 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa. Diego Maradona has received a lot of criticism for Argentina underacheiving despite having a roster of world class players.

The match was even through the first half was neither team could find the back of the net. As with Saturday’s match against Peru, Argentina would have to rely on a second half goal to get the three points. In the 84th minute, Argentina would find the goal to punch their ticket to South Africa.

Mario Ariel Bolatti scored in the 84th minute to give Argentina a 1-0 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Bolatti scored on a rebound after a shot from Juan Veron which was the match winner. Argentina will be in the World Cup finals despite not playing well for much of the qualification stage.
