The match began with both teams getting chances and some open play. The atmosphere was fantastic as it was a derby match.
Wolverhampton looked energized by the home crowd but wasn’t able to grab the lead in the first 20 minutes. They would continue to attack but the Villa defense stayed strong. Wolves attacked much more than Villa in the first half and keep the pressure up. They almost took the lead in the 35th minute off a corner but Villa player James Milner saved it as Friedel was out of position.
Wolves continued to get chances especially off set pieces but still couldn’t find the back of the net in the first half. Villa were outplayed for most of the first half but kept it scoreless. It was 0-0 after 45 minutes.
The second half was about even to start as both teams had some shots and chances. Aston Villa were the favorites heading into the match but never seemed to find their form in the match an hour into the match. Slowly, Villa improved as Wolverhampton’s level of play dropped.
Finally, Villa would break through in the 79th minute with a goal from Gabriel Agbonlahor. He made a run into the box, received a pass from Heskey, turned and shot past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. The match could have easily had gone the other direction but Wolverhampton was unable to convert their chances in the first half.
Wolves responded with a great chance in the 83rd minute that resulted in a penalty kick. It was a poor challenged from Sidwell of Villa to concede the penalty. The penalty was taken by Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and converted to make it 1-1. It was a deserved goal from Wolverhampton who were unlucky not to have another penalty awarded in the first half.
Overall, it was a tough and close match that played up to the billing as a derby match.
