English Carling Cup Recap - Tuesday, October 27, 2009
Most of the favorites advanced on Tuesday as there were not any major upsets. Many of the teams remaining are Premier League clubs with Barnsley, one of two Championship teams playing on Tuesday. They lost to Manchester United 0-2 and were the clear underdogs heading into the match.
In other matches, Tottenham Hotspur hosted Everton and defeated them 2-0. Spurs had goals from Robbie Keane and Huddlestone.
The longest match of the night was Sunderland and Aston Villa that had to go to extra time as it was 0-0 after 90 minutes. Kenwyne Jones had a chance to win it late for Sunderland but missed a penalty in the 85th minute. The match went to penalty kicks and Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan made some key saves as they won 4-1 on penalties.
Blackburn Rovers easily defeated the other Championship side, Peterborough United, with a 5-2 win. One of the matches that was though to be close was Portsmouth hosting Stoke City. This was not the case as Portsmouth dominated with a 4-0 win with goals from Kanu, Webber, and two from Piquionne.
