Ghana beats Brazil 0-0 (4-3 on penalties) to win U-20 World Cup; Hungary beats Costa Rica for 1-1 (2-0 on penalties) 3rd – Recap and Video Highlights

u-20-world-cup-egyptThe FIFA U-20 World Cup wrapped up on Friday, October 16, 2009 with the championship and 3rd place matches. In the 3rd place match, Hungary faced Costa Rica while Ghana v Brazil was the final. Both matches would end up going into penaly kicks. Here’s a recap of both alon gwith video highlights.

Ghana edges Brazil 0-0 (4-3 on penalties) – Video Highlights

The match was dominated by Brazil for most of it but they failed to find the back of the net. A red card for Ghana player Daniel Addo in the 37th minute forced the African team to play very defensively. Brazil had the majority of possession and chances but Ghana’s defense remained solid and kept it scoreless. It went to penalty kicks after 120 minutes of no goals.

The penalty shoot out started off strong as both teams converted their first two chances. Ghana would miss their next two penalties while Brazil converted 1 of 2. Brazil’s Maicon had a chance to win the match if he could convert the fifth penalty but missed it high. Ghana took advantage and converted their 5th round to make it 3-3 heading into the sixth round. Brazil missed their sixth penalty and Ghana would convert theirs to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup 4-3 on penalties.

Hungary tops Costa Rica 1-1 (2-0 on penalties) – Video Highlights

Both teams would score late goals in the 2nd half as it would end up going into a penalty shoot-out. Costa Rica took the lead in the 81st minute but conceded a late goal as Jose Mena was given a red card. Vladimir Koman of Hungary converted the penalty and made it 1-1 in the 90th minute. Neither team would score in extra time.

The penalty shoot-out started with a 1-0 lead for Hungary. Costa Rica struggled to tie it up and missed their first three chances. Hungary’s Roland Varga converted the 4th round to make it 2-0 in penalties with Costa Rica having to convert. Carlos Hernandez missed for Costa Rica who couldn’t make one penalty and lost the match.

    Ghana win, but only by cynicism. Still not greater than the champs. Brazil dominates but lose on penalties…grossly not fair.
