Lyon beats Liverpool 2-1 – Recap and Video Highlights – Tuesday, October 20, 2009
The UEFA Champions League group stage returned on Tuesday with eight matches. One of them was Liverpool v Lyon at Anfield. Here’s a recap of the match along with video highlights.
Lyon beats Liverpool 2-1 – Video Highlights
Liverpool has been struggling and once again was without Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres for the match. The club would lose at home and seems lost without their two best players. Gerrard did start the match but was subbed out in the 25th minute as he hadn’t recovered from his injuries.
The first half was scoreless until late when Liverpool took the lead on a 41st minute goal from Yossi Benayoun. It looked like Liverpool would get at least a draw or hold on for the win until late in the second half. Lyon would score two goals to stun the English club.
Maxime Gonalons scored in the 72nd minute and Cesar Delgado scored in the 90th minute as the crowd was absolutely stunned at Anfield. Without Gerrard to control the midfield and Torres to provide scoring up front, the club isn’t the same. It was a very disappointing loss for Liverpool and they have a lot of work to do if they want to qualify to the knockout stage.
