Manchester United beats Barnsley 2-0 – Recap and Video Highlights – Tuesday, October 27, 2009
The English Carling Cup continued on Tuesday with round 4. Many of the teams remaining are Premiership clubs however one of the Championship sides is Barnsley. They hosted Manchester United on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. Here’s a recap of the match along with video highlights.
Manchester United beats Barnsley 2-0 – Video Highlights
Manchester United used a reserve squad and rested virtually all of their top players as they still cruised past Barnsley Tuesday night in the English Carling Cup. Man U took an early lead on a 6th minute goal from Danny Welbeck. The goal came off a corner kick as Welbeck was by the near post and unmarked. The match would remain at 1-0 for United as the first half ended.
Barnsley needed to score the next goal to have a chance but wasn’t able to as Man U would extend their lead. Michael Owen would score in the 59th minute to make it 2-0 and seal the victory for United. The goal came off a throw-in for Barnsley that was intercepted and eventually passed to Owen who beat the goalkeeper with a low shot to the corner from the edge of the box. It was poor defending but also a great shot from Owen who has showed glimpses of his past form.
The match would get interesting four minutes later when Gary Neville was given a red card. Neville went in for a tackle but had his studs up and clearly a bad foul. It was not a smart play by Neville and not necessary as Barnsley were in their own end and not a threat to score. Barnsley had about 30 minutes left to try and tie the match as they would have a man advantage.
Barnsley struggled to find a goal in the final moments despite getting some chances. Man United were content with their 2-0 lead and were able t hold on for the win to advance to the next round of the Carling Cup.
