Kenny Miller claimed an early double as Rangers beat Celtic 2-1 at Ibrox on Sunday to move to within a point of their city rivals at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.
Miller ran clear to prod the opener past Artur Boruc after just eight minutes and extended the Light Blues’ advantage in 16 minutes when he swept a shot into the corner of the net.
Celtic, having had a penalty appeal earlier turned down, reduced the deficit in 25 minutes when Aiden McGeady netted from the spot after Zheng Zhi was impeded by Sasa Papac.
Shaun Maloney missed a good chance to equalise in the second half and Nacho Novo came close at the other end as Rangers held on to win the opening Old Firm game for the third season running.
Rangers manager Walter Smith said: “We probably needed a game like that to hopefully kick-start our season. There was a good spirit and determination, although I was little bit disappointed we didn’t control the second half better than we did.
“It was important for us that the gap didn’t increase any - I think that was the most important thing. We haven’t lost a league game yet and we were delighted to hold on to that aspect of it.”
Celtic boss Tony Mowbray said: “We allowed them to score. There was a lot of quality in our side and yet we find ourselves having lost the game. I’ve been critical of them over the last few weeks, hoping to get a reaction, and yet the mistakes are still there.”
