Americans Abroad in the Europa League Recap and Video Highlights: Howard and Dempsey both lose

BRITAIN SOCCER FA CUPThe UEFA Europa League had another full set of matches on Thursday, November 5, 2009. There were a few Americans involved including Clint Dempsey for EPL club Fulham and Tim Howard with EPL club Everton. Both loss as the teams struggled. Here’s a recap of Americans Abroad in the Europa League in the Europa League.

Tim Howard (GK) – Everton – UEFA Europa League – lost 0-2 to Benfica – Video Highlights

Howard made some solid saves but Everton were outplayed by Benfica for the second match in a row. Everton had a few chances but Benfica controlled the midfield for most of the match. The goals were not Howard’s fault as they were the result of poor defending and strong play from Benfica. Howard and Everton are in 2nd place in their group and can move to the knockout stage with good results in their final two matches.

Clint Dempsey (MF/ST) – Fulham – UEFA Europa League – lost 1-2 to AS Roma – Video Highlights

Dempsey typically plays an attacking midfield role but was up front in a striker role for most of the match against Roma. He had an average match as Fulham lost 1-2 to Roma of the Italian Serie A. Fulham had a lead until conceding two unanswered goals and receiving two red cards. The first was in the 50th minute and the second in the 90th minute as Fulham ended the match with only 9 men. He had several shots during the match but didn’t score any goals or have any assists. Fulham is in third in their group stage and needs results in their final two group stage matches to advance to the knockout stage.
