Celtic had only one point heading into the match while Hamburg with second in the group with six points. The first half was scoreless as possession was about even as well as shots and shots on goal. While Hamburg was the stronger overall team in the first 45 minutes, Celtic’s Scott McDonald had two of the best chances. The match could have easily been 1-0 for Celtic if McDonald had converted either of his chances.

Hamburg were the better team to start of the second half as Celtic looked a bit shaky. A draw for Celtic would likely kill their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage. With neither team scoring through 85 minutes, it seemed that the match would end in a draw. The match would end in a scoreless draw with Celtic unable to convert on their great chances in the first half.
