The UEFA Champions League had a full set of group stage matches on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 including Manchester United hosting CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford. Here’s a recap of the match along with video highlights.

Neither team was able to score in the first 10 minutes but Man U started to take control of the match. In the 14th minute, Fletcher had a shot on goal that just missed wide but had beaten the goalkeeper. Macheda had a shot that just went wide in the 23rd minute as Man U had virtually all the chances early. Despite being the better team, CSKA would stun Man U with the opening goal.
The goal was from Alan Dzagoev who shot from a wide angle and beat Man U goalkeeper Van Der Saar with a great shot. While it was a great effort from the CSKA player, it probably should have been saved by the keeper. The goal was in the 25th minute and quieted the crowd down. It wouldn’t take long for United to find the equalizer as Michael Owen would score in the 29th minute.
The scoring would not stop there as CSKA would respond immediately with a goal in the 31st minute. Milos Krasic would give the Russian side the lead as he received a through ball, took a dribble past the diving Van Der Saar and shot into the open net to make it 2-1. The Man U defense was caught flat footed but it was also great play from CSKA. The Man U defense was not great in the first half and CSKA took advantage of their chances. The first half would end at CSKA leading at 2-1.
The second half started out with an early goal from CSKA who extended their lead to 3-1. Vassili Berezoutski would score on a header from a set piece as the Old Trafford crowd as stunned. The defense for Man U was poor on this night and CSKA was taking advantage. With Man U needing at least two goals they would make some changes. Wayne Rooney, who didn’t start, would come on a substitute around the 58th minute. Patrice Evra was brought on in the 59th minute.
CSKA played with lots of confidence in the second half and seemed well on their way to a surprise result. Manchester United started to get some great chances and almost scored in the 80th minute as Macheda had a header that hit the right post. It was an unlucky break for United who would test the CSKA defense in the final minutes. Man U would cut the lead to 2-3 with a goal from Paul Scholes in the 84th minute.
The goal came from a free kick and it was headed by Scholes as the CSKA defense left several players unmarked in the box. Man U had almost all the possession and chances the final 10 minutes as they looked to get a draw. United would score the third goal to make it 3-3 in the 90th minute as Georgy Shennikov of CSKA scored an own goal. The final whistle would sound only a few moments later as Man United clinched a spot in the knockout stage and kept their unbeaten record alive.
