Real Madrid beats Alcorcon 1-0 (loses 1-4 on aggregate) – Video Highlights
1st Half
Real Madrid were embarrassed in the first leg and had to score at least four goals to have a chance at advancing. Madrid had chances earlier as Ruud van Nistelrooy had some shots on goal early. It was a much better start than the first leg for the home side. Despite some good pressure early from Real Madrid, it remained 0-0 (0-4 on aggregate) through 20 minutes.
Alcorcon are currently in the third division but continued to play with confidence against Madrid. With a 4-0 lead, Alcorcon was able to sit back and not take any chances or leave themselves vulnerable on the counterattack. They kept holding strong defensively in the first half as Real Madrid could not get a goal early. The crowd, which was into the match early, was now restless and at times jeering their home club. As the first have neared its end, Alcorcon’s defense tightened up and RM struggled to even get a shot on goal.
The home side had lots of possession but couldn’t turn that into goals as it still 0-0 with a few minutes left in the first half. Even though they trailed by four goals on aggregate, RM are a club that can score goals quickly. If they were able to get one, it would give the club some confidence and put serious pressure on Alcorcon. It was 0-0 at halftime with Alcorcon holding onto their 4-0 lead on aggregate.
2nd Half
Real continued their possession and scoring chances from the first half and almost scored early in the second half. In the 50th minute a shot hit the crossbar for Real Madrid. A goal seemed imminent for Real Madrid as the had the Alcorcon defense on their heels and continually getting shots on goal. Alcorcon deserved credit as they were playing a disciplined match and were not giving anything to Real Madrid.
Even after getting several good chance, RM failed to score and it remained 0-0 through 60 minutes. Alcorcon did not look like a third division club in the match but Real Madrid were not playing up to their potential. The seconds ticked away in the second half as Alcorcon was close to an enormous upset. It was 0-0 through 70 minutes and still 4-0 on aggregate or Alcorcon. The home crowd became increasing annoyed and disappointing as the reality of losing to Alcorcon was now very probable.
Real Madrid would get one goal late but end up losing 1-4 on aggregate. The goal was from Van der Vaart in the 81st minute. It was a very surprising result, especially the fact that Real Madrid only scored one goal in two matches against a team from the third division. Alcorcon will be boosted by the win and is now in the round of 16 for Copa del Rey.
