It was a busy weekend in the English Premier League with several Americans in action including Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Brad Friedel (Aston Villa), Jozy Altidore (Hull City), Tim Howard (Everton), and Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton). It was not a particularly successful weekend as neither of these teams won. Fulham and Everton were able to get draws but Hull, Aston Villa, and Wolverhampton Wanderers lost. Here’s a complete recap of Americans Abroad in the English Premier League for Saturday, December 26, 2009 and Sunday, December 27, 2009.
Clint Dempsey (MF) – Fulham drew with Tottenham 0-0 – 4 shots – Video Highlights
Dempsey played the full match for Fulham as they ended in a scoreless draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, December 26, 2009. The American had a few great chances, including a free kick in which he hit the crossbar. It was a disappointing draw for Fulham who were the better team for the majority of the match but couldn’t convert their chances.
Tim Howard (GK) – Everton drew with Sunderland 1-1 – 3 saves – Video Highlights
Howard made three saves as Everton managed to get a 1-1 draw against Sunderland on Saturday. The team continues to struggle and is only two points above the relegation zone. The club will be joined by fellow American Landon Donovan in early January. Howard was influential in the transfer and believes Donovan can excel with the club.
Jozy Altidore (ST) – Hull City losts to Manchester United 1-3 – Video Highlights
Altidore started for Hull City as they lost 1-3 at Man U on Saturday. The loss puts Hull in the relegation zone and manager Phil Brown on the hot seat once again. Jozy had a decent game as he earned a penalty that was converted by Fagan for Hull’s only goal in the match. He had a few other chances but Hull were outplayed for most of the match as Man U showed they are the defending EPL Champions.
Brad Friedel (GK) – Aston Villa lost to Arsenal 0-3 – 6 saves – Video Highlights
Friedel made 6 saves on Sunday but Aston Villa lost to Arsenal 0-3. The match was scoreless into the second half until Arsenal scored on two goals from Cesc Fabregas and one from Abou Diaby. The American goalkeeper was not to blame as the goals were an example of great individual plays and poor defense from Villa. After a run of four wins in a row, Villa’s loss to Arsenal has them in fourth place in the league table.
Marcus Hahnemann (GK) – Wolverhampton lost to Liverpool 0-2 – - Video Highlights
Hahnemann continues to start for Wolves but they lost to Liverpool 0-2 on Saturday night. Wolverhampton played solid for much of the match but things turned for the worse when Stephen Ward was given his a red card (second yellow) in the 53rd minute. The American goalkeeper was not to blame for either goal but generally played well to keep Wolves in the match. They remain 2 points above the relegation zone with 19 points.
