Fiorentina beats Liverpool 2-1 – Recap
The UEFA Champions League wrapped up its group stage on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 with several matches including Liverpool v Fiorentina. The first and second place finishers in each group move to the knockout stage while third place drops into the Europa League. Here’s a recap of the match.
Fiorentina beats Liverpool 2-1
Both teams had nothing to play for as the spots in the knockout stage and Europa League have already been decided. The match remained scoreless for most of the first half until Liverpool would strike late in the first half. Yossi Benayoun scored on a header off a Steven Gerrard free kick in the 43rd minute. The match was fairly even in the first half Fiorentina has some of the better chances until the late first half goal.
It would head into the second half with Liverpool still leading 1-0. Fiorentina would level the match in the 63rd minute as Jorgensen scored to make it 1-1. Liverpool was never able to find the form of recent years in the Champions League and Fiorentina would find a goal late for the win. The Italian club would score late in stoppage time as Gilardino made it 2-1.
Neither club had much to play for and Liverpool will now play in the Europa League knockout stage while Fiorentina is in the Champions League knockout stage.
