Fulham beats Manchester United 3-0 in the English Premier League – Recap and Video Highlights
Fulham hosted Manchester United on Saturday, December 19, 2009 in the English Premier League. Both clubs are in the top half of the table and have had successful seasons domestically and in Europe. Man U are in second place heading into the match and in the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League while Fulham are in the top half of the table and into the knockout stage of the UEFA Europa League. It was an close start to the match as neither team had any great chances in the first few minutes. Man U had the possession advantage but Fulham’s defense was solid and disciplined. Fulham had the first great chance of the match in the 17th minute as Dempsey send a pass into the box for Zamora who sent a pass to Gera who took a shot that was just saved by Man U goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.
Fulham was starting to take the momentum in the match and would strike first in the 22nd minutes. Captain Danny Murphy was score as he stole the ball from Paul Scholes in the midfield, dribbled towards the box, and scored on a nice shot to the left side. It was poor defending from United and specifically Paul Scholes who gave the ball away in his own end. The home side continued to attack and get the better chances in the first half. Man United were outplayed by Fulham in the first half and that was reflected on the scoreline.
The second half would be a dream start for Fulham who would score in the 46th minute to make it 2-0. Damien Duff sent a cross in the box from the right wing that was headed by Clint Dempsey towards Bobby Zamora who volleyed it into the back of the net emphatically. After conceding two goals, Man U would fight back and get some good pressure on the Fulham defense. Despite having the better of play for the next 30 or so minutes, they wouldn’t close the gap.
Fulham would score again in the 75th minute as Damien Duff hit a great strike from the edge of the box after receiving a header pass from Zamora. It was a disaster game for Man U but not a huge shock. They haven’t been in to form, have several injuries, and were traveling to Craven Cottage where Fulham are very strong. The match would end at 3-0 for Fulham. It was the second year in a row that Man U had lost at the Cottage.
