Americans Abroad Recap and Video Highlights – Sunday, April 18, 2010
It was a light day for Americas Abroad with not very many playing key roles in matches in the top European leagues. Brad Friedel got a win for Aston Villa in the English Premier League while there were a few playing in the Danish league (Benny Feilhaber and Michael Parkhurst). Eddie Johnson continues to get regular playing time in Greece while teammate Freddy Adu sat on the bench.
Below is a recap of several of the Americans playing abroad in the top European leagues on Sunday, April 18, 2010.
Americans Abroad Recap and Video Highlights – Sunday, April 18, 2010
Brad Friedel
The American goalkeeper played the full match as Aston Villa won 2-1 at Portsmouth. They are in contention for a Europa League spot and Friedel remains one of the top goalkeepers in the English Premier League.
Eddie Johnson
EJ has been a regular starter for Aris since joining around the same time Adu did. They lost Sunday 1-2 to Olympiacos as Johnson played 60 minutes. He has two goals for Aris but hasn’t scored since March 21. He has a good shot at making the roster with the USA team lacking depth in the forward position.
Freddy Adu
Adu didn’t play in Aris FC’s 1-2 loss against Olympiacos. He joined the club hoping to finally get consistent playing time to have a chance at making the World Cup roster but that appears unlikely. He has played six matches since joining the club, including two goals, and is showing some promise. He should get invited to a camp and has an outside shot of making the World Cup roster.
Benny Feilhaber
Feilhaber played the full match for AGF Aarhus who lost 0-1 to Brondby. They are only two points above the relegation zone with five matches left in the Danish SuperLiga season. The American is extremely likely to be on the World Cup roster. In 21 matches for AGF this season, he has scored one goal.
Michael Parkhurst
The former New England Revolution star played the full match for Danish SuperLiga side Norsdjaelland in their 4-1 win over Silkeborg. Overall, Parkhurst has played 17 matches for the club this season. He has a shot at a invite to the camp for the USA team but unlikely to get a spot on the final roster.
