One of the rivalries in international competition, England v Germany, was renewed with the teams meeting in the round of 16 of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Germany won Group D while England was second in Group C. It was a match that was about even as far as the oddsmakers.

Germany 4-1 England Recap

Germany showed they are a major contender for the World Cup as they thrashed England 4-1 behind two goals from Thomas Muller.

The Germans never trailed and had goals from Miroslav Klose in the 20th minute, Lukas Podolski in the 32nd minute in the first half. England would cut the lead in half five minutes later with a Matthew Upson goal but that’s as close as it would get. It should have been a tied match as Frank Lampard had a shot that hit off the crossbar and just over the line but was waived off. It was clearly over on replays but a break for the English.

Two second half goals from Thomas Muller within a three minute span (67th minute and 70th minute) secured the win for Germany as they move into the quarterfinals. They will play the winner of Argentina/Mexico.

It will be a disappointing run for England who had high expectations but it appears the team just couldn’t live up to the hype.
