United States (USA) v Ghana Preview

The two sides met in the last group stage match of the 2006 World Cup with Ghana advancing. The match was not without controversy as a penalty was given to Ghana which proved to be the winner but was highly disputed by USA fans.

Ghana come into this match off a 0-1 loss against Germany, 1-0 win over Serbia, and a 1-1 draw against Australia. They have looked strong at times but overall a bit inconsistent. The African side is one of the youngest in the tournament but does have a lot of potential. If they are in form they could beat anyone but at the same time could be prone to mistakes with their inexperience.

The USA have improved with every match and come into the match full of confidence. Defensively, they will likely stick with their back-line from the Algeria match which means Oguchi Onyewu will not start, Carlos Bocanegra will fill in at central defense, and Jonathan Bornstein will start at left back.

The expectations for the American team are rising and it will be a match many are expecting them to win. Can they deal with the pressure and expectations? Ghana are the only African team remaining and will have pressure of the whole continent cheering for them? Will this young side once again beat the USA the World Cup?

It should be a close match and it wouldn’t be surprising if extra time is needed. Many who aren’t familiar with Ghana shouldn’t take them lightly as they are a very dangerous side. The USA will need to start off well and not concede an early goal. Even though they have shown the ability to come back in this World Cup, it is difficult to do in the knockout stage.

Landon Donovan continues to be the key player for the USA while Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan has scored their only goals of the match. In the end, the Americans are coming into the match with confidence and belief. They should get the narrow win and get some revenge for the loss in 2006.
