With the news of Chelsea targeting Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, I thought I’d write about some of the best reasons for the deal to happen. Many Liverpool fans could view the sale of Torres as giving up any hope of a top 4 finish and the start of a rebuilding process. Here’s some reasons why the move would be a good idea for Liverpool to make the deal.

  1. He Wants Out – While no one is claiming Torres will refuse to play or lack effort if a transfer isn’t done, it’s clear that he wants the move. Keeping a player who doesn’t want to be there will not be good for Liverpool and it’s time to part ways. Fans could turn on Torres (if some haven’t already) and it will likely hurt the team chemistry.
  2. Transfer Money – The money that Liverpool would get for the transfer (would be at least £30 million and possibly a lot more) would allow them to buy 2-3 quality players to rebuild. The reds could start strengthening their team and get some depth that they’ve lacked since the departures of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano.
  3. Chelsea Will Overpay – Torres’ value will probably never be as high as it is now. Chelsea are desperate to stay in the title race and will be willing to pay an inflated transfer fee. If Liverpool don’t accept this transfer, they will likely not see any similar offers in the future. Torres isn’t old (turns 27 in March) but is getting to the point where his transfer is at its peak. If Liverpool want to get the most money, this is the time to do a deal.
  4. Luis Suarez – No one knows is Suarez will be a success at Liverpool but his signing gives some cover to sell Torres. While he hasn’t shown to be the level of Torres, he is a talented striker that could be a consistent goalscorer. Fans won’t be happy to see Torres leave but it can find some comfort that Saurez is younger (almost 3 years) and a proven international player.

Point 4 is moot. Suarez wasn’t intended to be the replacement for Torres but to act as a foil for him, playing alongside him.

Money or not we may not have time to bring in a replacement. Suarez will need time to settle and Babel is gone, that leaves Kuty, N’Gog and Pacheco, not good enough for what we need right now.
