Rangers advanced on away goals into the round of 16 with a late second half goal.
It was a back and forth match with neither team able to take control of the match. Rangers took a lead in the 20th minute wit ha El-Hadji Diouf goal but Sporting replied with a 42nd Pedro Mendes goal. In the second half, Sporting took a 2-1 lead with a Yanick Djalo goal but Rangers scored a stoppage time goal from Maurice Edu.
The Edu goal was the difference as Rangers would advance because of away goals (Sporting only had 1 at the Ibrox). Rangers will now face Lille or PSV Eindhoven in the round of 16.
