West Brom v Stoke City Preview
West Brom manager Roy Hodgson
“The fans can be very important at home games this season. I think Albion fans are good fans.
“During my short period of time at the club, they have been absolutely excellent.
“At Bournemouth, we had incredible support.
“I was really quite surprised to see so many West Bromwich Albion fans there and backing the team so vociferously.
“All teams need their supporters and, for me, supporters are people who are prepared to help their team out.
“They are not only satisfied with the good times, they even take some responsibility in the bad times to get behind their team and cheer them on.
“My short time here has been bolstered by enormous support and encouragement from the fans.
“If that can continue throughout the season, it will give us a better chance of surviving.”
“There’s no reason for me not to be proud of the players and the work they’ve done against Manchester United and Chelsea,” he said.
“They’ve given very good accounts of themselves in both games.
“In many circumstances, that would have led to points.
“But, of course, we have to live with the fact we didn’t get any points so there is an element of dissatisfaction and frustration.
“But it’s a long season and it’s important that we keep going and producing the performances we have so far.”
“At the end of the day, we’ve got to get to 40 points.
“If we were sitting here with six points, we’d only need 34 more.
“When you’re sitting on no points, you have to get 40 from the remaining 36 games.
“Whichever way you twist, turn and analyse things, that is the bottom line.
“You can have bad runs at any stage of the season.
“We’ve recently seen teams get relegated after being in very, very good positions – even being in the top three.
“So it’s important to keep that in mind, and keep things in perspective.
“But, of course, we would like to get ourselves off the mark as soon as possible.
“The programme hasn’t been kind to us and it’s never easy to get off the mark in the Premier League because every team is highly competitive.”
Stoke City manager Tony Pulis
“This will be the toughest game we’ve had with them since I’ve been at this club. Roy has instilled a bit more steel in them and they now have a strong team structure.
“They’ve had a very difficult start in the League, having to face Manchester United and Chelsea in their first two matches, but they played well in both of them and they could consider themselves unlucky not get something out of them.”
“They were struggling back then, but they showed in that match they had turned the corner by claiming a point and they went from strength to strength after that to finish in a respectable mid-table postion,” commented Pulis.
“Roy has made them a much stronger unit. He sets high standards in terms of discipline and organisation and he has got his new players in early to strengthen the squad. The lad Long is already looking a very good acquisition.
“We will show them the respect that they deserve, but make no mistake this is going to be as tough, if not tougher than our other games so far. They have an advantage because we played on Thursday and their Carling Cup tie was earlier in the week, so their players will be fresher. But we’ll send out a team to try and win the game.”
“It was my decision to pull Jermaine off rather than him having to come off because of any problem. We will have to look at one or two of the other players who featured in Thursday’s game before deciding our line-up.”
