Wigan v QPR Preview
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez
“Antolin has been a victim of his own success in many ways; since arriving from Bruges he’s had to play an incredible amount of games both at club and international level and although he’s had a little spells of rest physically he’s not been able to rest psychologically which can have a big effect.
“It means now that he’ll have 6-7 weeks away from action on the pitch, but we’ll use that time to help him prepare for what is to follow and allow him to regenerate and come back to take up his place as one of the best centre-halves in the Premier League.
“But with that absence we have a squad full of players who are desperate to play, working hard to take advantage of the situation and prove themselves in the team.
“We’ll also asses Victor (Moses) as close to the game as possible, he’s been working hard this week after picking up a slight groin injury against Swansea but he’s responded well to the treatment this week and we’ll see closer to kick-off.
“Victor is a powerful boy and has had similar problems in the past, so we hope he’ll have a chance for Saturday.”
“It’s fair to say we’ve continued with many aspects of our play from the end of last season; there is a real competitive edge in our play, a determination to keep a clean-sheet and overall a very difficult team to play against.
“We do need to be a little better in possession, we all agree we can do more with the ball than we’ve shown in the first two games, but it’s been a tricky start for us and this weekend will be just as difficult.
“Queens Park Rangers still have that winning mentality that earned them the Championship title last season and it can be difficult to match those levels of enthusiasm and energy at times.
“They have a real match-winner in Adel Taarabt and as team have a real togetherness which makes them a difficult team to play against, but most importantly are in that newly-promoted mode of having no fear in their play as we saw against Everton at Goodison Park.”
QPR manager Neil Warnock
“It has given everybody a massive lift (win at Everton last week)’. The first game was cruel.
“With all the build-up and the way that we lost, it was a difficult week for us.
“The club was changing hands, and we didn’t know whether it was going to happen or whether it wasn’t.
“It was always touch and go so there were a lot of concerns in that respect.
“There were also a lot of concerns that the players were a bit shell-shocked early in the week [after the Bolton result].
“Then there was the virus later in the week, which even this week we have still lost a couple to.
“That is football, though. It never ceases to amaze you as we go and get a result like that at Everton.
“And believe you me, it would not surprise me if Everton don’t lose another game at home this season. They have got a great squad so it is a fantastic result.
“It gives us a little bit of confidence and we know Wigan is going to be difficult, plus my old player Victor Moses is flying at the moment.
“It will be a tough match but it is better to go in with the points on the board that we have got, knowing we have got two weeks and that we are going to bring in four or five good players.”
