Wolverhampton Wanderers Sack Manager Mick McCarthy
With Wolverhampton in a tough relegation fight this season, it was no surprise that the club decided to part ways with manager Mick McCarthy. The club issued the following statement on their website about the decision.
Wolves have today announced that manager, Mick McCarthy, has left the Club with immediate effect.
The Board took the difficult decision to terminate Mick’s contract after a run of form which has seen Wolves pick up only 14 points in the last 22 League games, after a promising start to the season, culminating in yesterday’s 5-1 defeat at home to West Bromwich Albion. Terry Connor will take charge of team training in the interim until a new manager is appointed.
Mick McCarthy joined Wolves in July 2006 and led the Club to the Championship title in the 2008/2009 campaign, before keeping the Club in the BarclaysPremier League for the past two seasons.
The Board would like to place on record their sincere thanks and appreciation to Mick McCarthy and he leaves with the very best wishes of everyone connectedto the Club.
After winning their first two league matches, Wolves lost six of their next eight matches. Through round 10, Wolves would get no higher than 13th and spent most of their time around the relegation zone. Last weekend, things started to look up when Wolves won at QPR. The victory was short lived as Wolverhampton suffered an embarrassing 5-1 loss at home against West Brom.
There are several names mentioned as a replacement which include Neil Warnock, Alan Curbishley, and Steve Bruce. Terry Connor, assistant manager under McCarthy, will become the caretaker manager.
